What’s the idea?
The FrameRage Animation Challenge is all about creative and artistic handling of animation to a given soundtrack. It’s about fun and nice ideas! It should be much more aimed at inspiring the audience with interesting ideas and spontaneous design, and less about spending a lot of time on a perfect animation. See the challenge as a way to try out new things and experiment. Animation should be fun – to make and also to watch.
How does it work?
About once or twice a year, we will publish one or more soundtrack files with a length of around 30 seconds. The soundfile is usually created by a sound artist or animator following an open call. Each animator is then asked to make an animation to one of the sound files. Whether professional or hobbyist, every animation artist is welcome to participate.
When the animation is completed, you can upload your submission to Vimeo or send us the file via WeTransfer, Smash or a similar large-file transfer service (please note the technical specifications below). Feel free to include some further details about yourself, the film and/or the creative process.
Finally, we collect all the films and show them at Wagenburg Lohmühle in Berlin-Treptow. Everyone is invited. The audience then votes on who has created the best animation and who will be named FrameRage Winner of the challenge. Then we will publish the films on this website.

Is there a deal?
As this is a 100% non-commercial nerd passion project run by a (very) small group of animation enthusiasts, nobody makes any money on this – neither the organisers nor any of the artists. Just as you are allowed to use the sound file and publish it with your animation, the sound designer may also use your animation and, for example, link it to their website.
How did it start?
The FrameRage Animation Challenge was created, curated and hosted in 2018 by animation expert-lecturer Markus Wende and ran successfully for nine installments at the Tricktisch Stammtisch in Z-Bar and Wagenburg Lohmühle, until it was forced to a grinding halt by the Covid pandemic in 2021. Five years later, the logistics of FrameRage Challenge was offically handed over to the Arthorse Comic Collective in 2026.
Please note the rules!
- The animations should be uploaded in good quality. We suggest using a minimum of 1280 x 720 pixel and a framerate of 24fps.
- Your animation does not have to be as long as the soundtrack file. While title and credits can also be created before or after the soundtrack, it is also perfectly legitimate to include title and end credits as part of the approximately 30 seconds.
- It is definitely not allowed to cut or otherwise edit the soundtrack!
In addition, you may not add any other sounds or music. - In the credits, the sound designer and the challenge have to be credited in the following way:

The animation was produced as part of the Framerage Challenge (www.framerage.org). - The animation must be made by you personally and you must have the publishing rights to it. By submitting your work, you allow us to post your animation on our page.
